FAQ'S
Why Orthopets?
Orthopets sets the industry standard using state-of-the-art, high-resolution digital scanning and 3-D printing to provide the highest possible quality device for your pet.
Are prosthetics and orthotics covered by my pets insurance?
Yes. Most pet insurance providers offer coverage for veterinary orthotics, prosthetics, and rehabilitation therapy, depending on your plan. Contact your individual provider for more information.
Is a stifle [knee] brace right for my pet?
There are many factors involved in deciding to prescribe a stifle brace. These include: age, activity level of your pet, how long your pet has been injured, severity of the injury including meniscal tears and your goals for your pets return to function. A brace is for life and regular maintenance will be required, so sometimes surgery is the preferred option.
Why do I need a referral?
Veterinary orthotics and prosthetics are custom fit medical prescription devices that are designed specifically for each pet. They are part of a comprehensive pain management program and your veterinarian is in the best position to understand your pets individual needs.
How long do they last?
There are many moving components in a device that are subject to wear and tear. Proper maintenance and care is paramount to keeping these devices functioning properly. Total refurbishment (including straps and pads replacement) is recommended as needed, but often happens every 2-3 years depending on how active your pet is in its device.
Why is rehabilitation therapy recommended for braces?
Many pets have been compromised for a period of time before being fit for a device and they need gait retraining and strengthening of weakened limbs. The device is foreign at first and they need to learn basic life skills while wearing their device, such as learning to use the stairs. They may need help with balance, coordination and neuromuscular re-education which a rehabilitation professional is trained to do.
